FTC Sticks to Decision on BL&P Electricity Rate Increase, Consumers Awaiting Final Ruling

November 21, 2023
"The Fair Trading Commission (FTC) maintains its decision to deny the full electricity rate increase requested by Barbados Light & Power Company (BL&P), pending a final order that will determine potential refunds."
The Fair Trading Commission (FTC) is sticking to its decision not to grant the Barbados Light & Power Company (BL&P) the full electricity rate increase it has been seeking since October 2021.
It means that the way has been cleared for Barbadians to find out how much their electricity bills will be, a decision FTC hearing chairman Dr Donley Carrington says will come before Christmas.
Until then, consumers will have to continue paying the interim electricity rate hike in place since September last year.
A decision on if BL&P will have to pay any refunds from the interim rates it has received from customers will come when the FTC issues its final order, but yesterday the utility company said it was “deeply concerned by the FTC’s ruling and will review the decision before providing further comments”.
